DC: do teens on learners permits need to be added to insurance?

| 16 yr old just got their learners permit. Do we need to add them as an additional driver to our insurance e now, or not until they have an actual license? |

| Depends on your carrier. You need to call and ask. |

| Generally no. Not until they get a provisional license. But call and confirm. |

| Call your provider. We have Geico and the rate didn’t go up until they were fully licensed but they were covered when they had their permits. |

| We are in VA and when I called they didn’t need to be added until the license. Progressive didn’t want anything when they had their permit. |

Once your child gets their license your insurance company will be made aware. Geico knew once both of our children got their license. They called us and sent a letter |

Once teen gets their license (not permit), I think you are supposed to call immediately to add them and not wait for them to contact you. |
