I need to buy a ball gown - consignment store recommendations?

Anonymous
Ok, I have discovered I need to attend a formal black tie event two weeks from today in Europe (this sounds as ridiculous to me as it probably does to you). I see that Rent the Runway maxes out at 8 days, so that will not work based on my trip length, so I'm going to need to pick something up somewhere in the DMV over Thanksgiving break. What consignment stores am I likely to have luck at? I will hit up Secondi (the only one I know) but don't know what are other likelies? Willing to go anywhere in DC or to any county that touches DC.

TIA!

How much do you want to spend?

I would look at the sale racks at the upper end department stores at a big mall. Sometimes department stores are easier than thrifting.

I get great ads on DCUM for Neiman Marcus. Went to my local store (non-DMV) and didn't see such sales. But maybe at a bigger mall...

Wardrobe Rescue in Vienna is having a Black Friday sale with a discount on black items on Friday. They have a formal dress rack.

Thank you! It would be awesome if I could keep it under $250, I figure if I have to buy new I'll need to go up to $400.

Bloomingdales's usually has great sales on gowns this time of year. I typically purchase 2 at time and spend right around $500. I've had success at both the Friendship Heights store and Tysons.

Secondi. Have gotten a gown for a black tie wedding the night before when I was in a pinch. Call ahead and see if they can text/IG DM you pics of their inventory.

Try Sheyla Vie in Friendship Heights. The entire second floor is formal wear. They'll have some new dresses well within your range (some out of it, but just tell whomever is helping you) It's like a high end TJ Maxx (and TJ Maxx is across the street also and quite often will have something!)

There will be a ton of options for under $250 at Nordstrom Rack, brand new. If you strike out thrifting, since it can be hit or miss, hit them up

I've gotten great deals (at the one in Friendship Heights) on dresses there as well!

I am conveniently down the street from there so will check (it was the one non-consignment store on my list but was worried about prices)

What about Macy’s? They should have a sale rack. Bring your coupons.
