Transferring to school for 10th after being rejected for 9th?

What are the odds for a student who was rejected by a Catholic HS when applying for 9th grade, to apply again as a transfer student in 10th and be accepted? Thinking SJC and Gonzaga.

It depends why he got rejected in the first place and if there is any attrition between 9th and 10th.

Very unlikely at either school. They are always at capacity and may only have 2 slots available and they will still have many applicants for those 2 slots.

Applying to high school is a lot of work. I wouldn’t waste your time unless you know why your student got rejected in the first place. How were the grades, testing, essays, teacher recs? Sometimes it’s just a numbers games and sometimes it’s not.

SJC takes a bunch of transfers as they have a hard time keeping enrollment.
The current 12th grade has lost close to 15% of the class from 9th with students who have peeled off for both public and private. My DC's friend group has left for: MoCo and DCPS public schools, AHC, Good Counsel, Bullis - as well as schools outside of the DC area
However - if your child was straight up rejected when they applied out of 8th, you need a good story. They make lots of exceptions for athletes and donors - does your child fall into either of those buckets?

Why does SJC lose so many after 9th? Seems odd.

I think high shools in general lose students for a variety of reasons including not a good fit, athletics, money, personal reasons, etc.

Was 12th grade a COVID class? A lot of schools lost students during those first years of the pandemic.

I'm a believer that things happen for a reason. Is your child unhappy at their current school? Why not try to make the best of it? Holding out hope to attend another school can keep them from truly making the best of their current situation.

Current 12th graders were virtual for 7th grade.

OP here. Archbishop Carroll. B/C student. Will need financial aid. Lots of friends went to Gonzaga and SJC and DC hopes to join them.

I would think it would be difficult to be accepted into either of those schools with B/C grades and needing financial aid. Both are very competitive.

Thank you for your feedback. DC’s friends say that it is easier to be accepted as a transfer to these schools than in 9th grade, so this is good to know going forward.

I would call both schools and ask if they anticipate having openings in their 10th grade class next year. It’s my understanding that GZ’s 9th grade class is over enrolled, so that might be a long shot. But, it’s still worth calling.

I also heard that both Gonzaga and SJC’s freshman classes were over enrolled so even if some kids leave there may not be any openings.
