JMU vs VTech for Engineering

Anonymous
Ok, help me reason through this. Someone is considering sending their kid to JMU to save 25K. But JMU only has a general engineering degree. Why would someone choose that path?

To save $25k (a year, presumably). If you don't have money, you make all sorts of trade offs.

Are you sure it’s not GMU? GMU has a pretty decent engineering school. Cheaper than VTech and better than JMU.

But what can you do with a non-specific engineering degree?

The person said -oh they'll do a masters program that is specific and I argued that Vtech like most engineering schools has a 5 year Masters which arguably saves more than 25K

They do not understand the range of jobs available with engineering, and are thinking $ over common sense in a lean job market.

JMU is not a stem

Why don’t you just ask the parent?

OP, why are you arguing with someone else’s decision? Butt out.

How is this any of your business, OP? Maybe their child didn’t get into VA Tech and they don’t want to tell you because they know you’re judgmental. Maybe their child liked the vibe at JMU better. Maybe they have financial considerations. Maybe they’re saying this to mess with you.

They asked my advice because they got into both but pushed back on my advice to go to Vtech really hard on the money part. I didn't understand why they saw the two as equal.

JMU and VA Tech decisions are out already? I didn't know they were rolling.

Maybe they like the environment at JMU better. We had to keep my child relatively close by due to medical issues, and he chose VCU over Mason, which is objectively a better engineering program.

The only reason she gave me was 25K savings

They aren’t rolling so this is giving troll vibes.

But, JMU does publish employment stats for graduates. Anyone interested, I assume, can push back & ask what companies/roles grads are getting hired at/for. I’d try asking the department or career services. They report an excellent placement rate so anecdotes of people saying they wouldn’t hire general engineering grads doesn’t mean nobody hire general engineering grads
