Long Haul Sleeping on Plane Etiquette: Snoring

Anonymous
Fresh off a long haul from
east coast to europe, 6 hour flight. Woman snored so loudly for 5 of the 6 hours nearby passengers were unable to sleep.

WWYD—obviously personal ear plugs would help but I was traveling with small kids and the sound was deafening.

Should we have woken the passenger up? She was a few rows behind us? Asked the flight staff?

Everyone was complaining about it as we made our way to baggage claim at arrival.

How do you handle sleeping on a plane if you are a known snorer? Or, if you have to listen to a snorer what is within the realm of acceptable.

Omg. Hell…. Don’t know what I would have done!

I think it's okay to ask the flight attendant what the etiquette is about someone snoring louder than a truck. And maybe accidentally gently step on her foot as you walk by to wake her.

6 hours is NOT long haul.

Deal with it.

Agree one could ask because this seems like such an unusual situation that someone was snoring THAT loud. I travel a decent amount on red eyes and don't think I've ever encountered that.

No, you don't wake them up.. Its not their fault.

I have, on a flight from India. I've never heard anything like it before--sound cancelling headphones did nothing.

For the future, bring over the ear noise cancelling headphones. They are great. You just can't count on quiet on a plane. If it weren't the snoring woman it would be a crying baby or something else.

But also - six hours isn't that long.

You deal with it - just like the person who leaves their window up with light glaring in or talks loudly with their neighbor or who stands in the aisle next to you or has bad breath.

Eh she can’t help it. I’d just put my headphones on.

Had a large family on my red eye flight to AMS that “took over” first class and clearly flew private regularly and forgot how to fly commercial (one woman literally got up to use bathroom when we were 2 seconds past wheels up, she almost flew backwards down the aisle to the back of the plane.) Nonstop loud talking and aisle takeovers the entire red eye.

Point of the story is MYOB and scream internally : )

If I snored, I would not sleep on a plane. How rude! If I was on that flight, I would have walked by and nudged her.
