Basketball shoes

My first grader girl is trying for a winter basketball sport like a few weeks for the first time. Does she need a basketball sneaker?

It will be indoor since it is winter

For first grade. Nah.

Once you get to 3/4th the. I would say yes.

We buy separate shoes for basketball just so our kid has clean shoes for the court but I agree it’s prob not necessary for first grade. At older ages they can wear for the season then use as regular shoes for the rest of the year. At younger ages they grow too fast to do that!

Highly recommended. Parents don't realize how important it is to protect kids ankles and knees, and it isn't like they can't wear them to school.

Other athletic shoes might be OK at that age, but there are a bunch of girl's fancy shoes that are substantially no good. So, assuming she already has decent shoes then no.

First graders are still learning, normal sneakers (not cheap knockoffs from Amazon, but real sneakers that fit your child) will be fine. It of course depends on the shape of your child's feet, but we bought a lot of New Balance at that age.

Op here to update. DH insists to get her basketball shoes to protect her ankles. She can't wait for her first practice this weekend.

Another question, what does girls wear on basketball practices in winter indoor? Shorts or long leggings or long fleece pants? It is her first timer to join an existing team.

Shorts for sure. It’s hot in an indoor gym.

Shorts and a tshirt.
Wear pants over the shorts to get there then just take them on and off.

For practice, she can wear whatever - mine usually wears leggings and a short-sleeve shirt because she says it's too cold for shorts. When she does wear shorts, she wears a pair of track pants over them and takes them off at practice.
