Hi - my daughter who is in 5th Grade/11 years old is in a book lull. I think required school reading plus sports has left less time, but she has typically loved reading. Last year and over the summer she was into books like Keeper of the Lost Cities, Dusti Bowling books (Dust, Canyons Edge, etc), Alone by Megan Freeman, and before that she was really into the Front Desk series. She's a little older now and would love to get a collection of some great choices together for her to peruse.
Any suggestions appreciated! |
| Has she read the Percy Jackson books or the Land of Stories books? |
|
Tough because we don't know what she's already read.
I might ask at a local bookstore as they often have the pulse on what's new and popular for age groups. For older books there's Holes, Percy Jackson, Mysterious Benedict Society, Harry Potter, Enchanted Forest Series, Chrestomanci series, etc. |
| My daughter is that age and really liked the Lottie Brooks series. It’s British, I got it on Amazon. |

Authors:
Lynda Mullaly Hunt Katherine Marsh Holly Goldberg Sloan Sharon M. Draper Lisa Yee Kelly Yang (Front Desk series author has other books) Series: City Spies New Kid James Patterson's Middle School series Calvin and Hobbes Big Nate National Park Mystery Series Emmie & Friends Many of the Scholastic Graphix graphic novels are good |
|
Judy Blume books were some of my favorites at that age.
Babysitters club, Sweet Valley are easy, fun reads… |
|
My kid that age has enjoyed:
Virginia Mysteries (series) American Girl History Mysteries (they aren’t about the doll characters, and are more advanced than the typical AG books) Mr. Lemoncello series Harry Potter Prairie Lotus Light Comes to Shadow Mountain Books we read together when she was younger but would be good for current age, too: Little House on the Prairie series Anne of Green Gables series Other suggestions: Charlotte’s Webb Percy Jackson Wings of Fire |
| Thanks everyone! These are great.. making a list. Her brother was a die hard Percy Jackson fan so maybe I need to have her re-visit that (didn't interest her a while back). |
"Are you there God? It's me, Margaret" - likely old enough for this Judy Blume classic? |

My DD really loved
A Night Divided |
|
There are two more books after Alone. Has she read those?
Maisy Chen's Last Chance by Lisa Yee Kelly Yang's other books, beyond the Front Desk series |
|
Grace Lin's books
The Year of The Dog, The Year of the Rat, Dumpling Days Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, Starry River in the Sky, Where the Sea Turns to Silver |
|
My 5th grader has been tearing through the Track books—Ghost, Lu, Patina, Sunny and Coach.
Also loved First Rule of Punk and Turtle Boy |
|
Jennifer Nielsen was my dds' favorite for historical fiction at that age.
Also - has she read all the Kate DiCamillo books? Those books are modern classics. My dds never got into series (except one of them is/was obsessed Warriors, which seems more niche), but they both enjoyed Sharon Draper, Lisa Yee, the rest of Dusti Bowling's books, The War That Saved My Life, and pretty much every middle grade graphic novel when they were 11. |
