Corporate Success

If you consider yourself successful in your corporate career, how so?

What made you successful? Any tips and advice? Thank you!

I work in a corporate role and have moved up from manager 4-5 times over the span of 15+ years. I started at $70k and now make $200k+ stock plus bonus. My tips:

1) relationship matter in my company, more than any specific project. People have to want to work with you. You can be good at your job, but if people don’t wanna work with you, all bets are off.

2) you can still go do a good job and get laid off. Don’t take it too seriously.

3) stay under the radar. You don’t have to make a name for yourself. Life will go on without you at work, if you died tomorrow.

I consider myself successful because I make more than anyone in my family (including my husband and my family of origin), and while I could make more money, I’m sure, I have pretty decent work life balance. But, that is my definition of successful.

I stayed at the same place for 20 years and moved up. Took risks, agreed to jobs others didn't want. Waited out some very bad managers. Also around $200k plus but 40 hrs a week and not much travel.
Being at the right place at the right time in the company helps a lot.

I aligned myself with people who had clout within my firm and did whatever I could to make their lives easier. I started at $45K ten years ago and now make around $180K.
