The number of kids in remedial math classes went from 32 in 2020 to 921 in 2025. This includes math typically taught in middle school. According to another article about this, a huge percentage of these (like >40%) had taken precalculus or calculus in high school. Absolutely bonkers.
This is not equitable to these 921 kids. High schools didn't prepare them well for colleges, sending them in for failure.
What UC should do is to have an extra year for these students, tuition free. During the prep year, UC provides remedial courses in math, english, etc to make sure they are on equal footing wiht other first year students before they start first year courses.
