Recent reports show U.S. high school students' math and reading scores have dropped to their lowest levels in decades, continuing a trend of decline. The National Assessment of Educational Progress ("The Nation's Report Card") found that nearly half of high school seniors are testing below a basic level in both subjects, with reading scores hitting a historic low since testing began in 1992.
Historic lows: The most recent data from the Nation's Report Card shows 12th-grade reading and math scores at their lowest since the respective tests began in 1992 and 2005. Below basic levels: Nearly half of all high school seniors are scoring below the "basic" achievement level in both math and reading. Impact of the pandemic: The declines are seen as a continuation of a trend that was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted learning for years. Broader trends: The decline is not limited to high schoolers; earlier reports showed significant drops in math and reading scores for younger students as well. Skills deficit: Students are graduating with fewer skills and less knowledge in core academics than their predecessors, a concerning trend in a society that increasingly demands higher-level skills. |
| Equity has been achieved! |
| If the US would let immigrants in, we wouldn't have to worry so much about the demand for higher-level skills. |
| With AI, nobody needs to have higher level skills. AI can figure it out for you. |
| With the smartphones, social media, extracurricular activities, is it a surprise that the scores are going down? |
| In reality, with AI, do the kids even need to learn reading, writing, math, like anything? They can get answers in secs using AI. |
+1. School right now is pointless anyway. How many people are really using calculus in their day to day lives? Meanwhile how many kids know how to repair a basic rip in their clothing? Why are kids spending years of their lives learning things they don't need? |
I can't imagine a life where I can't read or write for pleasure, without the assistance of a device. |
Sure, you can’t. But we’re all obsolete, all of us typing and reading and thinking about education. None of this actually matters anymore. |

This is in response to all of the posts about kids not being prepared for college and remedial classes in college.
DUH. Kids are not as intelligent. They are arriving at ALL colleges ill-prepared, at all rankings. |
| 50% of the entire population doesn't know how to wipe their azz without phone consult first. |
Your statement assumes that immigrants are more capable or superior to well-educated Americans. - NOT TRUE |

| Look at teacher educational attainment in their school years. Dropped. |
it's one 100 percent true. You just don't like to hear it. |
