Junior DS is a good-enough student - mostly As in mostly honors classes, but not super academic - but has a special skill in film editing (a couple of prestigious awards, strong social media presence, portfolio).
On his initial list Dream schools: UCLA Tisch USC Strong contender: Emerson Maybes: Chapman Loyola Maramount DePaul Ithaca? Syracuse? ***RISD (not sure how strong film program is?) Anywhere else we should begin to target? |
| Wesleyan has a really good film program but without top academics I wouldn't count on it. |
| You need superlative academics for the top film schools line UCLA and USC. Start by talking to your high school counselor, not here |
What really matters is that he tries to get a lot of different kinds of expe |
What matters more than the name of the school is that he attends a school in Chicago, New York or Los Angeles, so that he can get a wide variety of experience; that he takes a lot of AI, computer science and big data classes, so he’s comfortable with working with complicated software and giant files; and that he try to save some money, so that he can at least produce some micro budget projects on his own. |
| Film editing is considered more of a tech skill and better acquired through community college. Google it. |
| Chapman is out of place on the "Maybe" list. Dodge is one of the top film schools in the country. It's very competitive. |
No, it isn't. |
Plus 1 |
| What about Belmont? |
| Purchase College. |
Not true. Absolutely apply to both. Obviously USC is ridiculously expensive, but it’s the best there is. |
|
Keep Ithaca on the list.
Is he definitely thinking film school? BFA vs BA or BS? really different programs/contexts eg Syracuse has both a a BS in tv/film at Newhouse and BFA at VPA. BFA is more traditional film school -- and Newhouse is Newhouse |
Yes, keep Syracuse on the list. Newhouse is great. Probably true at all these schools, but there are a ton of opportunities through OTN (Orange TV network) for the kids to work on and run their own shows. |

I have friends who are professional film editors.
Put Hampshire College on the list. |
