Senioritis

For those parents with kids who already graduated high school: if and when did Senioritis kick in? How is kid doing in college or elsewhere now?

My kid didn’t have much room for senioritis until a couple days before graduation. Waitlisted RD at top choice and was pursuing it until waitlist closed right before graduation. Enjoying their second choice and haven’t looked back now.

April/May It was rough.

At Cornell now as a sophomore. Doing great. It’s intense, but she’s maintaining a healthy balance.

after accepted to top choice college but kid was still quite motivated - wanted to keep the all A record, just didn't care as much for AP exams

So they didn't behave badly but they talked about how hard it was to tolerate the more boring classes, towards the end.

It was really close to the end of the school year. Mine was involved with a fall and winter sport, so good school performance was required to participate. It was really tough those last two weeks, but it wasn't really that bad.

Admitted to top choice school in January.

Stopped pretending to care about AP Calc AB grade immediately. That continued to be an issue.

Bobbled a quarter grade in History. But recovered for semester.

AP Calc and Stats tests were sacrificed on the Altar of Unconcern.

Current GPA 3.5-ish. Has some rough spots, does well in areas of strength.

Parents were grade-grubbing near 4.0 types. We mostly avoid losing our cool.

My senior caught it around October last year. didn’t do well in his APs. He was ok in AP language or whatever seniors take but Cs snd a D across AP chem, AP stats and AP macro/micro. I was freaking out his offer would be rescinded or that maybe he would do poorly in college but he has straight As. I guess he was just burnt out.

Kid was accepted ed in December. If i remember correctly, I think senioritis started to hit in January which was not good bc our private was full steam ahead with hard work and exams up until graduation. To be clear, my kid still did every assignment but was certainly less motivated as spring approached. They also started going out more socially. I didn't care about gpa, but I worried about rescinded acceptances if grades fell too low... thankfully, my kid did well. I would have been more concerned if my kid was on waitlists they cared about. Kid is now a college freshman - happy, busy and working hard. Grades tbd...

One in mid- Dec after accepted ED, one 2nd half of senior year (that one almost failed Whatever AP English they were in, received the gift of a D, which along with the A 3rd quarter = B, with an A first semester still equalled an A - MCPS grading is a joke). The mid-Dec one is a senior now and is busy looking for a job, so stressed about that, but generally happy. The other one is in grad school, also happy

Spring semester even after being accepted ED in the Fall, DS kept working very hard, I was very proud of him.

Did he know where he was going to college in Oct? Did that lead to not doing well or not caring to do well after Oct?

Looks like they have changed grading policy starting this year

Second semester right after getting EA results and admitted to desired school. Did a grade check 6 weeks in and DC had literally turned in no work all quarter. Miserable spring break for everyone. Dragged kid across finish line with Bs and Cs and one D (in freaking art)🙄.

Summer letter from school:
We received your transcript (yay!)
We noticed a drop in grades (uh-oh)
We have data that shows you may need support in fall. Here’s a list of resources (phew!)

DC of course did not take advantage of that and discovered (despite warnings) that they couldn’t turn in missing work, couldn’t make up missed quizzes, and couldn’t cram an entire semester last minute and pull it together on the final. Had to take advantage of freshman forgiveness and retake two classes. Got it together after that.
