Feds when do you leave because of shutdown

Anonymous
OK, what if they keep not paying us for six months, do you try to take that job as a teacher in Nebraska? At what point do we realize that they are never gonna pay us, but this is the way get they are shrinking the govt?

I am actively looking, but all my offers mean moving, and spouse is still employed so it’s a wash — maybe I should live apart from family? I guess I wouldn’t even give notice, just take another job until reopened. If you are excepted, wow you are screwed

Apply apply apply. Then go to your boss and ask to be furloughed and they’ll bring someone else back in.

Take a loan from your TSP.

I’m never leaving. I’d wait them out, even if it takes until 2027.

My entire division is excepted. Public safety agency.

So you have a rich spouse?

For me it would depend on a number of factors including if I own in DC and when I purchased, if I have local family, if spouse is a federal worker etc.

The near term future doesn’t look good for DC but could improve in 5-10 years. Housing prices will likely continue to drop and this shutdown could go on for quite some time. All federal workers are at risk for being laid off.

I’ve made quite a few large moves in my career and moved around so I’d jump at the opportunity if it’d a good career move and I could escape DC.

So you are saying you'd take the teaching job in Nebraska, and when the government re-opens, you'd just drop that teaching job and return to DC?

Yep. Different people will have different answers, but I have no kids, and I can run on spite for a long time.

My work is important. I'm going to keep doing it as long as I can.

I have an employed spouse and savings.

I recall that many of the people who survived the GFC pivoted into something different and/or relocated. I’m not sure digging in your heels and staying put in a government job is the way to go right now.

DP. I wouldn’t move to Nebraska. I’d find a more desirable location, move and not plan to return to DC. Most people are living in DC a because of their job and with the current and likely future job market being what it is, it doesn’t make sense to stick around.

I have plenty in savings (45k), but I'm not happy my bank account is hemorrhaging money with routine bills without anything coming in. However, I don't have any other options, and it's not clear even if back pay would be paid if I quit.

I appreciate you running on spite. Thank you for caring about your work.

I saw a picture of my Department's main building yesterday with a giant Trump face banner and flag hanging from it. It reminds me of Soviet Russia.
