November 8 SAT

My daughter has a 1490 (760 math/730 verbal) and is desperately trying to get above a 1500. She took it today and said the math was absolute hell, much harder than previous sittings; English was okay but had "weird" transitions and questions. What are your kids saying?

Didn’t take but my anecdotal evidence firm previous tests is scores didn’t necessarily reflect how hard the test seemed. Hopefully your daughter got the score she was seeking.

My guess is your daughter with one under her belt will see a minimum 20 point jump.

My kid also thought Vocab was hard in Second module; likewise thought second math module was hard. Currently in despair bc wants mid 1500s. (And was scoring that on last four bluebook practice tests she took). Who knows? They do norm the tests so really depends on how everyone else did ….

Seems like most reddit posters are reporting hard, but a few here and there had an easier version. This is unsurprising of course, as everyone gets a different test, but still speaks to the strategy of multiple retakes, hoping to get lucky with an easier one.

Honestly, the difficulty is going to push some back toward the ACT. We're an SAT sort of family (do better with trickier questions with slightly more time) but my youngest will be trying an ACT practice test.

Especially with verbal she might misjudge her own performance. My kid’s last SAT she almost walked out because she felt the verbal went so badly. But it was her best verbal score, 770. At the very least allow that anecdote to help your kid have a better afternoon.

DD said the same; RW was fine but math module 2 was hard. She booked 790 math in September, if it helps put things in context.

This thread has so much crazy.

This thread has so much crazy.

This is OP, and a few years ago I would have had the same reaction. My daughter knew a girl in her sport who is 4 years older and took the SAT 9 or 10 times (and finally got above a 1500). I thought it was absolutely insane, but here we are during junior year and my kid has verbally committed to a school that doesn't really give an admission preference to recruited athletes, so we are are right in the crazy.

And there’s a material difference in likelihood of admission between a 1490 and a 1500?

And if she doesn’t get into this one particular school, the other 15 just like it aren’t acceptable? Or the 25 others kinda like it?

Not trying to be snarky, but this thread really illustrates the complete lack of perspective prevalent in this forum.

My DC is done with the tests (current senior going through the application gauntlet), but in 3 SATs they score a 760 verbal every time. All their movement was in math, but they felt differently about the verbal section every time. Ended up with a 1530.

They took the ACT once, thought they had completely bombed it and got a 35. So hard to tell how the score will come out.

Good luck to all.

She has verbally committed to a particular school. That means she has cut off communications with other coaches and programs.

NP, in retrospect, as the parent of a student that stopped at 1490 (two tests), I do think there is a material difference between a 1490 and 1500+.

Younger sibling had identical scores as older sibling on first two tests, took it a third and got a 1530. Very different kid in lots of ways but both very high grades, older actually stronger academically naturally but younger put in tremendous effort after seeing the challenges older sibling went through and has stronger ECs. We shall see how things go.
