Teen medical records are private?

Anonymous
I went to look up my 15 year old son's medical records on the pediatric patients portal and it says privacy enabled and I cant see anything. Is this common? The pediatrician did a genital exam as part of his wellness checkup in the last couple years-she asked if he wanted privacy and he said yes, and I went to the waiting room...is this somehow connected?

Virginia law allows minors to consent to their own medical treatment in specific situations, such as for sexual assault, drug and alcohol abuse, or mental health services, giving them the right to control their own medical records.

Military yes, but the teens also are not allowed their own account to access things so its a nightmare. I cannot get prescriptions refilled easily.

Depends on the state.

I’m in Maryland too, and I always go into the waiting room when my teen (now 17) has a genital exam. I just logged into his patient portal yesterday and had no issues.

My ds changed when he hit 18. I think you should have access if he’s only 15.

Anything related to mental health was private for us. I don’t remember the age that started. For everything else, I had access until 18. But literally at midnight on the 18th birthday, access was cut and I got an email notifying me I could no longer see anything but the bills. We are in MD.

+1 I’m also in MD. Had access until they turned 18.

Is this Kaiser? It happens automatically when they are 15. Which is perfect because I take them to all their appointments, I pay for the medicine they are prescribed - and I have no access to the accounts so I don't get the reminders.

It's a completely insane system and we missed a bunch of appointments until I realized what had happened when they turned 15. Now I control all the accounts - logging in to 4 separate accounts to make appointments for each of the children.

Op here-i called the office and they said they do it automatically when thr kids turn 15- she said for compliance with state guidelines. She said I can still request whatever records I want (wanted to see his growth chart).

In Maryland, this starts at age 16. Time to let your boy grow up.

The doctor will counsel them on sex, drugs and rock and roll and will also ask questions to find out if any abuse.

It’s a good thing.
