Did you receive any kind of severance? 30 days? 60? None?
We are a family with one SES who is early 50s and will not have 20 years. Any info on your experience is really appreciated - we are trying to plan financially for the next 6-12 months. |
| Go to your federal benefits statement on employee express. It details exactly what your severance would be. |
| I didn't think SESs get anything. You work at the pleasure of the president, right? |
| no, that's not SES |
i have heard of multiple agencies that did not abide by the employee express severance details. |
That actually is. |

If you're RIF'ed under the normal RIF procedures, you will be entitled to 1-2 months of "notice" that the RIF is coming, and then upto 1 year of your pay, as per severance calculations (which you can find under the OPM website). The severance will be doled out monthly like it's a paycheck. If you go back to the federal govt, the severance will stop immediately, of course. This holds true for GS and SES level officers.
If you're fired for cause, then no severance. |
| I know an SES who was RIFd and she got multiple months of admin leave in connection with the RIF. She was anticipating severance pay, but found another federal job so I don't know if she would actually have gotten severance. |
No, you're thinking of political appointees. Lots of SES are career. |
The multiple months of admin leave could be related to DRP. |
| If the SES position was formally eliminated, then the laid off incumbent can file for forced early retirement. There are specific OPM rules about this. Everything has to be documented. |
