I am an IT professional with 20+ years of experience. Every 2 years big changes come up at the companies I work at and my role gets impacted. I am one of the most productive employees and always get 5 star reviews, but my job just never sustains. I am tired of constant changes, rounds of interviews, proving myself over and over at each new place I work at. I often think of quitting IT and venturing into something else but I don't know what. Sometimes I want to buy an embroidery machine and customize tshirts, on other days I want to get into food business. Ideas run in my head but never get executed since I don't have any other experience other than my career. I am looking for success stories, ideas, encouragement....
Would it even be a good idea to quit my career and do something else I have not done before? I have a family to feed and kids are elementary school aged. So I understand it's a risk to venture into something new. But even if I continue with IT, I know I will be perpetually unstable. |

If you don't have a clear idea of what you want to do, it is not a good idea to quit your job.
You can try interviewing for other roles, but you likely wouldn't get paid as much. |
| Start a side hustle business and if it’s successful to replace your current income then quit your day job. |
| I don't know how helpful this is...but I am also considering a career pivot (from defense contracting to nursing or being an ultrasound tech). I've started volunteering in a local hospital to see how I like it before making the leap. |

If you have kids, providing for them is your top priority. How you do so is up to you, but you can't put them at risk just because you dislike your job.
Come up with a plan for change and start executing - don't exit on a whim. |
| Op here. Don't know what side hustle to get into. Not knowing that is the biggest challenge. Anyone here done a switch from their regular career to something else and done well? |
| I think you’re in a “grass is greener” situation here. Why do you think you’ll feel more stable in another field? |
I don't know if I will be stable in another field either which is what my question is around. My career has been unstable. I always have a lot of work, always learning new things at work, but I lose my job due to organizational changes, changes in priorities, the department itself getting closed etc. AI has also caught up and younger people without much experience will be able to do what I do. Overall, I am experiencing a lot of stability in my core field which is the only field I have always worked in. There are many like me in the job market already. That's the reason why I started thinking about doing something different. It comes with a risk since I have young kids and no concrete experience at whatever that another field is. Grass is not greener for me on this side or the other side. I don't even know if there is grass! |

OP- what do you do in IT? are you like a PM?
Maybe you can pivot that to something else. |
| Every two years is normal now sadly. |
| Have you thought about going in-house door an organization that is mission-driven? Maybe if you feel more connected to larger good works that would help |
