| Can someone explain BC engineering to me? DC attracted to “human centered” part (ie development, etc), but I’ve been warned off that it’s not accredited. Whatever that means. I’m not an engineer obv. TY! |
| No offense, but if you are considering engineering, NEU, BU (obviously MIT if you can be the lottery winner), even WPI. |
|
Doesn't offer traditional specialties.
Was supposed to get accreditation following the grad class of 2025, though I do not know how long the ABET process takes. |
OP suggested the kid was attracted to the human-centered part, though. Obviously BC would not be for anyone looking to become a mechanical or chemical engineer. |

Is your kid a senior? It just graduated it's first class & is applying for accreditation. It's *much* less math & science (unless their studio classes & reflections somehow cover it?) than any engineering program I've seen, including JMU which is just a general, non-specific engineering degree: https://www.bc.edu/content/bc-web/schools/morrissey/departments/engineering/about/accreditation.html
It's clearly not a traditional engineering degree. Would your kid be into any of these jobs? It sounds kind of like a social science & not engineering tbh. https://www.bc.edu/content/bc-web/schools/morrissey/departments/engineering/engineering-major/careers.html |
+1 Who goes to BC for engineering? |
| If it is not ABET accredited, most employers will not even consider it a valid engineering degree, but they might consider it valid as a non-engineering degree. |
just no. there are plenty of accredited engineering programs in the T50 that have a wide variety of undergrad sizes, research areas, prestige, location. Pick a balanced list from that group then see where you get in. |
My kid is interested in BC because it’s clearly not engineering focused, unlike a lot of universities today. |
| If kid wants a good career might look at other schools |
So you kid wants to be an engineer, but wants to go to a school that is "not engineering focused"? I don't even know what to tell you. |
nobody said this kid wanted to be an engineer. it's a NP, new kid. some people want colleges with fewer engineering students |
| I dont think BC would start this process with a new program unless they had pretty good clarity about receiving the ABET certification. |
| NU > BU > Tufts > BC in this order for engineering/ |
|
ABET accreditation is retroactive fwiw. So if BC receives it, which I expect they will, it will be accredited full stop. even if they get it a year after you graduate. you graduated from an ABET-accredited program.
if you have a kid who is interested in a peace corps to international development kind of job path, this is a good degree. They may end up in field work or policy work instead of Google or SpaceX, but that may be more aligned to the kids interests. |
