Will they be able to access our attic?

Anonymous
We need to have some electric work added on our new house and know they’ll need to access our attic. The only access is in a small closet with a tall, permanently attached shelf, similar to this:

We can contort ourselves to peek our heads into the access space, but I don’t know if I’d be able to get my body up there. Do electricians know how to twist and contort themselves in situations like this?

No. They are people just like you. If you can't fit your body up there, why would they be able to. You need to remove the shelf to allow them access.

LOL @ “people like you”… how dare them unable to reshape their body for OP.

You may want to to have a handyman install pull-down stairs to facilitate attic access, even if you don't have a heat pump up there or otherwise know you'll need routine access for maintenance tasks. Being able to inspect your roof from the underside every once in a while is a good way to detect water leaks or other issues before they become major problems, and you can also more easily add to your attic insulation if you want to improve it.

I don't think this is necessarily true. My grandma has an attic like this and my sister can access it. She's very good at climbing things.

My very buff male brother could not get in there despite being good at that kind of thing.

They probably have someone on staff who is know as the "little guy" who can make it in there.

Yes, our electrician has an assistant who is an actual weasel.

We had an attic access like that. The pest control guy had no trouble getting up into it. I forget if he just leaned a ladder or what but we didn’t even think twice about it!

Remove your things from the closet unless you want some stuff ruined. That should be obvious enough. They will use a ladder to get up there. Not hard at all for anyone under 70 years old.

I sure hope this is a joke. I really can't tell anymore.

I’m enjoying picturing a weasel with a tool belt. It would be handy for all those tight spots!
