Anyone else have indoor/home clothes and outdoor clothes?

Anonymous
A few years ago, I got into the habit of always changing the minute I got home, into clothes that never go outside.

I think it started because I started sometimes working at a bed table during the day and I didn't want to sit on my bed in clothes that had been outside. Somehow that kind of turned into not wanting to sit on any of my furniture in "outdoor clothes" and therefore treating these two kinds of clothes as totally separate.

So on a typical day I'll get up and get dressed in outdoor clothes so that I can take my kid to school. Then I will return home and put on indoor clothes (not my pajamas from the night before, though they are often loungey clothes like sweatpants) and work until lunchtime. Then I'll run errands during lunch in my same outdoor clothes from the morning, then go home and put the indoor clothes back on. Then outdoor clothes again for school pickup. Then when I get home from that I will shower immediately and change into pajamas.

On in office days obviously I just wear the same clothes from the time I leave in the morning until I get home at night, but I still shower and change immediately upon getting home.

I know this is vaguely insane, I don't expect many people do this. But does anyone? Ever since I switched to this, I really like it and even have a special place to hang up my outdoor clothes between wearings. I also think it might be helping me with my seasonal allergies since the clothes I'm wearing most of the day have not come into any contact with outdoor allergens.

Nope. I wear shoes in the house and dry my laundry outside whenever possible.

Yes, this is a thing in African American culture actually.

OP it doesn't seem that insane to me if you are organized and not just changing outfits five times a day and throwing everything on the floor like my teen does.

I definitely have no outdoor clothes on beds ever rule. I also have outfits I wear if I shower (like after the gym at a weird time) but it's not time for pajamas yet.

I’m from India and this is what we’ve always done. We get into the house, wash our feet and hands and change into our indoor clothes.
I don’t wash feet anymore now but I always wear indoor clothes as soon as I get home.

Well, I don't do what you do, but it does not seem extreme to me because it sounds like you're organized and not changing multiple different outfits throughout the day and I assume your indoor clothes can be worn multiple days if they just stay inside the house.

What I have are indoor shoes and outdoor shoes.

This sounds like anxiety/OCD to me. It’s one thing to not want to sit on your bed in clothes you wore to garden or even to take the metro. But “that kind of turned into not wanting to sit on any of my furniture in "outdoor clothes" and therefore treating these two kinds of clothes as totally separate” and by my count, six outfit changes in a day really pushes this over the line to an unhealthy place, mentally.

I have a pair of indoor shoes and take off my outside shoes right near the front door. And I also change out of my outside clothes into a nightgown when at home.

I live in a city and ride subways - I am positive I've sat in a subway seat recently vacated by homeless people. So I come in and always take off my pants. Then its like "well might as well be comfy and take off my bra too" and then "might as well go full comfy and take off everything!"

When I lived in the suburbs and drove everywhere, I just took off shoes upon coming inside.

I do similar.

Yep change into indoor clothes which are more comfortable and I ride the metro so prefer a set of clean clothes.

Yes, I really got into this habit during COVID.

I have clothes that I wear indoors on furniture, on the bed. And clothes that I have worn outside, I change when I get in. I also have major allergies so that also helps with the pollen and pet dander from outside. I was also told to shower before bed to not be sneezing so much.

Yes, although my husband and I refer to the indoor clothes as "transitional clothes" because it's what we wear between our work clothes (we work in-person) and our pajamas.

If it's been a crazy day sometimes we'll announce we're going straight to pajamas.

I grew up like this - my parents and grandparents did it, and it’s a habit for me. I also have indoor only Birks and Ugg slippers, and I don’t wear any other shoes at home. I don’t have any issues with sitting on my living room/ dining room furniture in “outside” clothes, after all, my guests do it, but absolutely no “outside” clothes on the bed or the chaise in my bedroom.

I do this. I don't like it when my outdoor clothes are on my bed for example. I have home clothes/play clothes.
