Spouse laid off, financial aid question

Anonymous
Spouse was laid off 11/2. This reduces our income by nearly 2/3 and moving forward brings us below the threshold to receive full tuition at DC's college. Just wondering about others' experience in this kind of situation. Did the FA office respond quickly once the documents were submitted? Trying to figure out if we'll get relief for the upcoming spring semester.

Same here. I mentioned this in the CSS file.

Have you run the net price calculator with an adjusted income and all assets yet? They will include severance pay as income for this year.

I'd contact the financial aid office ASAP. Responsiveness will obviously depend on the school.

We did this my kid's sophomore year and financial aid returned my email within a couple of days and told us how to apply for aid for an already-matriculated student. In our case, the deadline (for the following fall) was later than it was for new applicants but it might not be, so you'll want to know for sure.

I didn't ask about current-year aid. I think the ship has sailed on that at most schools, but they sometimes have an emergency budget for kids in dire situations.
