Auto insurance for college kid - what limits, etc?

Anonymous
We pay the auto insurance for my college freshman daughter. Just to make things easy we added her to our policy with the same limits, but I am looking to cut costs and am thinking about just carrying liability insurance for her.

Thoughts?

how much are you saving by doing so? usually liability is what costs you the most. comprehensive doesn't add too much.

DP: with their summer job(s) and likely a PT job during the school year. Kids can earn $10-15K in a year without working more than 10 hours PT during the school year....work summer and most breaks. It's what most of us did 25-35 years ago to afford school/life. It's what non-rich/UMC+ kids have to do

I just took mine off for the school year. She can’t afford to have a car at school. The only downside is that she can’t drive during break which is only two weeks so not that big of an issue. She has to go back right after Christmas for sports. But even if she didn’t I wouldn’t keep her insured. It’s about of money.

Please tell me what kind of jobs these kids are doing earning 10-15K while enrolled Full Time in College?

Honestly, no cares what happened 25-35 years ago....

In my area minimum wage is over $15/hr. You go to target/stores and work for $18-20/hr for 40 hours a week during summer and all breaks. 12+ weeks over summer is $8-9K, more if you have 2 jobs and work 50 hour/week+. Or waiter and get tips and you will make even more. Then you get a 8-10 hr/week job while in college (many available on campus and nearby) even at 10-12/hr that is $400/month. Work when home over xmas for 2-4 weeks and also spring break. A kid can earn 10-15K quite easily if they want to work. The jobs are out there.

Or work less hours and earn less, but if your kid is not contributing 5-10K yearly, then they are not working hard.

And yes I did that while in college with two time consuming and one very difficult major, and while overloading almost every semester (over 6 years worth of courses taken in 5 years).

So raise a spoiled brat and go into debt, but it's not "25-35 years ago" to expect your kid to have a job once out of HS. Summers and breaks during college and a small PT job while in college are more typical than you think

I see adults in other forums unable to get these jobs. I rarely see anyone under 21 working at target.

NP: DS pays for his own auto insurance (as well as repairs, maintenance, etc.) With the money that he earns during the summer.

Does she have a car there? Our insurance, USAA, has a college student option that is a much lower rate, so long as the student is out of the area and did not bring a car to college. I would want some coverage in case they rent a zip car or borrow a friend - or are home on break.

Might vary by state but we were required to keep DS on the policy as his legal address was still our address and he was licensed. There was a discount because he was over 100 miles away
