| Doctor prescribed a short course for asthma/bronchitis triggered by a virus, but never taken them before so a little reluctant. Am I overthinking it? |
|
Yes. You are overthrowing.
Do you want to feel better or not? |
| Over thinking^^ auto correct strikes |
| In my opinion, they are better than antibiotics. Not sure why you would not want to take them. |
| Are you talking about inhaled steroids like budesonide? I wouldn’t be concerned taking that short term. Breathing is important |
|
Just be careful if you have high blood pressure or diabetes— steroids can raise both those levels.
For bronchitis steroids can really help, just aware especially if you are also on inhaled steroids. I do question if they are overprescribed for low back pain flares. |
| They work and they're fine for short-term use. |
| I got them twice and were really working well |
| Hi - OP here, not inhaler, the pill form. Not currently on any steroid inhaler. thanks for the input. |
|
I’ve been on them for short courses due to allergies, skin rashes, lung issues, sudden hearing loss issues.
I hear your concern but they are supposed to be safe for short-term use. Drink lots of water. |
|
Yes you’re overthinking. They aren’t antibiotics where a case could be made for overuse.
|
It’s a different case. Using steroids in one patient does not reduce the steroids’ effectiveness in anyone else. But steroids cause a raft of side effects that can be worse for the patient than antibiotic side effects are. With that said, a <10 day course I would!’t hesitate about. I was on them for nine months and have a cataract to show for it—fortunately I got away without bone loss, diabetes or psychosis. |
I’m also a person who was on a high dose for months and will do whatever I can to avoid them again. That being said I would take a short course to rid myself of a respiratory infection |
Oh jeez, no I would not take them for bronchitis |
You will if you’re coughing so hard you feel like you’re going to break a rib |
