Are very difficult tests the new normal?

Anonymous
I recently took a test for a senior position in business intelligence. I was surprised by the difficulty of the test. I have been writing SQL.and Python code for 8 years and the questions they have me were 90% theoretical and very very difficult. If this is the new normal I am f**d because I am not in the top 10% of people in my field and if these are the people companies are looking for I may as well look for another field.

For reference one of the question had to be with proving a statement in set theory..wtf? And this wasn't even a big tech or startup

Ok rant over ... Back to searching for more opportunities....

OP here. It was a proctored exam. I took it at home. I don't think I will make it to the interview phase.

Well, now you know what the test are like and you can study and prepare.

You probably applied to a fake job. But then of it was fake, why would then pay for a proctored service?

Sorry OP. Yes it's competitive out there. I am not in your field, but I recently sat on an interview panel and I wanted to cry for the lady who was being interviewed. You would have thought we were looking to hire Einstein. I don't know what happening, but maybe some companies enjoy being sadomasochists.

That sucks. What was the statement in set theory? Curious if they were testing for familiarity with a well known concept or looking for a novel application.
