Would you let a very mature teen get a tattoo?

DD 17 is very mature for her age, always has been. She's very academically oriented and likes reading. This weekend, she told me and DH that if we give her permission, she'd like to get a tattoo of a line from her favorite book, The Picture of Dorian Gray. At first I said no way! However, I've been reconsidering. She's had this idea for three years and it doesn't seem like something she would just randomly regret one day. If she doesn't do this with us on her side, I'm fearful she'll decide to have a teenage rebellion and turn to some less than credible "artists". Thoughts?

Starting on that Hedonist path early eh? It will be one of many tattoos. If you haven't put the kibosh on tattoos by now, you really cannot stop her from becoming the next Picasso or subway wall.
Her body, her choice.

She'll be 18 soon enough

No. Tattoos are trashy.

Nope.

I'd let them decide at 18 and also let them know about the cancer and other health risks

OP is it this one?
“I am too fond of reading books to care to write them.”
― Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

I have always love that quote and it has rung true for me. But for DD I say NO. She might write a book one day! Or she can get the tattoo and then it would be deliciously ironic! OK, I say Yes!

That’s my 17 year old DD’s favorite book, too, and I can totally see her wanting that tattoo. I would probably tell her to wait until she’s 18. Tattoos shouldn’t be rushed.

PS- I have loved that quote since I was your daughter's age. Wouldn't be upset with that as a tattoo at my age.

I would say she has to be 18 and has to pay for it herself.

Rules are rules for a reason - why is your kid special?

She'll be 18 soon enough. My wife has a tattoo are got on her eighteenth birthday and had wanted since she was 12. Her life isn't any different because she waited a little to get it.
