MEVC feedback please

Our daughter got an offer for a 2s team at MEVC. Looking for families with previous experience at MEVC to talk about club culture, how they deal with any drama from parents and if there are other things to consider / look out for. We have already spoken to the coaches.

When we tell folks she has an offer from MEVC, we hear “they’re so mean!”

This will be her 2nd year club ball. She also has offers from two other places. MEVC is the only Club where we haven’t spoken to other parents about the good, bad, ugly.

Insight is appreciated!

We have experience from clinics only. Their facility is not great (at least that's what my DD told me) and they have no space for spectators, so you drop off your DD, then pick her up at the end. Based on rankings, they seem to be right in the middle lane, with a couple of teams doing better and a few worse than the average. But the difference between team 1 and team 2 is not as big as in other clubs. Based on rankings, I feel like they place their teams in tournaments that challenge them appropriately. There are teams that play above their level and the players end up frustrated and disappointed. . You also have teams that play below their level and their ranking is artificially high: they win easily, but they are not challenged.

How old is your DD? The 14/2s coaches have never coached club before.

Any other information about MEVC? Particularly interested in the 15s to 18s teams.

I stole the image from another thread. In the age group you are interested in (15-18), their top teams are doing relatively well. Of course, they are not as competitive as the MVSA teams, but they rival Moco at times. With one exception, (17s), their bottom teams are in the middle pack. I would say this is a pretty solid club if you cannot make MVSA or the top Moco team. You will always hear people complaining that the coaches are mean, but you have to also consider that lots of snowflakes are living amongst us. You have these gentle parents who are outraged when the coaches tell the kids to move their feet.

Thank you for this (NP). What do the colors on the chart mean? If you had to choose between Moco2s and MEVC1s which would you choose? Thanks

Here is the original link, where the plot is described in more detail: https://volleymontgomery.wordpress.com/2025/07/11/2025-club-rankings/
The color is a code for whether you are looking at a top team (green) or a bottom team (red), with the middle tier teams in yellow / orange. The number is the percentile based on rankings (you prefer a smaller number). Would I change clubs for a number that's within 5-10%? Probably not, unless it is also closer to home. The answer to the question about Moco2s and MEVC1s depends on what age groups you are looking at. When you consider a specific age group (let's say 15s), you should probably look at the 14s because those will be your teammates, not the 15s from the prior year.

Our team played MEVC 1s and MoCo 1s and MEVC

Sorry, I hit submit too soon. I meant to say that our team played MEVC's and MoCo's 1s teams last year (for U16) and I thought MEVC's team was better than MoCo's. They were just more solid. I realize this doesn't match the information elsewhere on this forum, which tends to be pro-MoCo.

Your experience is accurately captured by the picture above (look for 16s line and look at the colors/numbers). If I had offers from Moco 1 and MEVC 1 for the 17s, I would pick MEVC 1.

The comparison at U14 ages between MEVC and MOCO was covered extensively in other threads. The consensus was for U14 last year was:
MOCO 1 > MOCO 2 > MEVC 1 > MOCO 3. If past performance at U14 is any indication, then U15 MOCO 2 will be better than MEVC 1. That pretty much matches the chart. According to the thread, MEVC1 played MOCO3 once last year and MOCO3 won.

The MOCO tryout for the 15s teams was apparently really hard -- DD walked in thinking she might have a chance at getting a 1s offer and walked out knowing she didn't have a chance at 1s and a 2s offer would be hard. She was on the top court for some of their Friday tryout and there were 20+ players she felt were really good, including 4 or 5 in her position. At MEVC she thought there were a few players better than her in the gym, with maybe one in her position. She walked out of MEVC pretty sure she would get a 1s offer.

Last season, both MEVC teams were relatively less competitive at 14s level: even Moco 3 ranked better than MEVC 1. Even Platform had a better ranked team than MEVC last year, which says a lot. MEVC has a history of giving preference to some of their their returning players, which may backfire for their 15s teams this year.

MEVC added a make-up/second chance tryout tonight. Maybe they need to fill more positions.

I think it’s just for certain positions where they were still deciding.
