I am probably going to going have to use one of these for the first time next week (or Curb) to get a ride back from dropping off my car at the shop.
In the Bethesda/Rockville area, would you recommend one over the other? How far ahead do I have to get the app and enter my payment info (ie, is authorization immediate?) Am I better off reserving the ride in advance, or calling a car in real time? Thanks. |

You can use either a lot of drivers drive for both companies. Get both apps and enter your payment information the day before.
You can reserve OR order a car in real time. Put in a reservation the night before in each app to see which one charges less, and go with that one. Fun safety tip: Make your profile name a man's name. If you're Kim, use Kevin, if you're Ashley use Andrew, etc. When you get into the car after you've said hi and buckled, pretend to make a call and tell your imaginary friend "I just got in the Lyft - it's a black Nissan, and I should be there in 20 minutes." That way the driver knows someone is expecting you. For Ubers you can even send your route in real time to a friend to track you. |
| Get the app now. |

I'd use these if they didn't require an app. Just call like a taxi and pay cash to driver.
Don't trust the apps. Too many data leaks these days. |

Do I tip in cash or in the app? How much?
Thanks! π |
In app, it should give you some options. The driver wonβt know how much youβve tipped until you get out. I usually do 20 percent. |
| Lyft required me to upload a picture...so I just use Uber...its rare for me so I am not worried about the cost much. |

Download both. Check the price the day of and book the cheaper one. I have a slight preference for Lyft because they have a "Lyft Pink" option that says you prefer to ride with female drivers. I think Uber might have also recently launched something similar, but I don't remember what it's called. Note that it doesn't guarantee a female driver.
I don't have my picture on my Lyft profile and it hasn't been a problem. |
| Tip in the app. Do not pull out cash. |
| Thanks all! |
Cash tips are much more preferred obviously. |
You tip through the app. I tip 20%. |
| Tip: download both, one for personal use, the other for business use. It's too easy to accidently charge the wrong credit card for a trip. |
