Declining verbal offer

Anonymous
I recently accepted a job offer after being unemployed for three months. I’m still continuing my interviews until I start my job and have two final round interview results I am waiting on.

One of the jobs would normally be my dream job, it’s exactly what I want to be doing professionally. However, the job I accepted seems much more secure during the Trump administration. If they make a verbal offer and I think about it for a day, look at the benefits/pay, and then decline, would it hurt my ability to work there in the future? Small company with <1000 employees.

Why can’t you say you are very interested but want one or two days to review the benefits, discuss with your spouse or trusted person, etc.? And if you do accept and then get a better offer, I think it is fine to tel them you changed your mind - it is all how you phrase it to remain in their good graces for future hiring IMO. You might also be able to leverage two offers to get a better salary….
