Federal contractors, how are things?

No one seems to talk about us during the shutdown. Curious how things are going for others out there with stop work orders, contract modifications unable to be issued, work slowing down, etc.

We ar asked to take 1 day of vacation a week

Some staff being laid off. Can't sit on overhead/bench.

My company is almost exclusively DoD, so work seems to be continuing for almost everyone but a handful of people.

Depends on the company and contract. DH is now home and burning through vacation to keep a paycheck. His company is not offering to cover salaries while people aren’t billable. We are okay, but he has people on his team who are hurting.

Isn’t overhead going to be next as with fewer contract seats there is less money for overhwad

Endless sunshine and unicorns. Between DOGE and the shutdown, it's been a heck of a 2025.

+1. I’ve been a non-DoD contractor for nearly 25 years and 2025 has been the worst year of my career by far. Clients and programs I’ve worked with for decades just gone and the shutdown is simply the cherry on top.

Loving it, no meetings and can just catch up on emails all day long.

+1, but 20 years in. It's a hot mess and there is no light at the end of the tunnel in my industry.

I am ~10 years in and am strongly considering making a career change. I am completely over this. This year has been so stressful.

What does this mean? A salary is a salary. I don't see how they can choose not to pay-- it's not connected to billable hours unless that's the specific arrangement.

They would have to lay off.

DH's company is furloughing all their contractors.
