My DS is in 2nd grade at a well-regarded DCPS school. He’s doing fine overall, but when I asked him to write about what he did last weekend, he gave me six short sentences with almost no detail. I tried to walk him through writing an intro and some supporting ideas, and he got frustrated and said, “I don’t want to do paragraphs.”
I know writing develops at different speeds, but is it unreasonable to expect basic essay structure by this age? I’m not pushing for college-level writing, but I don’t want him to fall behind either. Do teachers focus more on structure later? |
| My third grader wrote 6-8 sentences today about her weekend. I’ve never seen her do that before. |
| Most kids don't learn to write paragraphs until 2nd grade. |
| No. Second graders don’t write that much in DCPS. I don’t think my kid was attempting that length until third or fourth. |

You dolt.
Even middle schoolers have trouble with 5 paragraph essays. Do not traumatize your kid. I can see you're well on your way, so stop it right now. |
| No. |
Yes, it is completely unreasonable to expect a five paragraph essay in second grade. |
| Of course they should dummy! |
| Totally unreasonable. |
No, it's too risky to try sarcasm. I feel this OP would get the horsewhip out to get a 5 paraf essay out of their 7 year old. |

I’m a writing tutor and have taught elementary writing for a long time. Most 7 year-olds cannot write multiple paragraphs unless it’s a narrative story and mostly active plot (think first this happens and then that happens, events listed one after the other.) Even then, they need a lot of scaffolding and it takes a long time. Almost no 7 year-old can write a multi paragraph persuasive essay. Nor can they just sit down and write in one go with no preplanning.
Your son sounds like his writing is very age appropriate. |
|
You are insane. There are maybe five 7 year olds in the country that could do that.
|
| Ridiculous expectation, Op |
|
No, they should not.
Kindergarten students should be able to write 2-3 sentences about the same topic. First grade should be able to write a paragraph, WITH SUPPORT. (I taught my low income, ESL kids how to do this with lots and lots of scaffolding, talking through ideas, using sentence frames and graphic organizers, etc.) Second grade should be able to write a decently formed paragraph independently (for the most part). Third grade should be able to write a few paragraphs on a topic. Fourth and fifth graders should be able to write a 5 paragraph essay, WITH SUPPORT. |

Sadly, I doubt that most adults can write a decent five-paragraph essay. I am not kidding. Remember, only about a third of American adults earn a college degree.
I think that the five-paragraph essay format is taught during middle school or high school. That's not to say that most students learn how to do it. |
