Bloodwork and prediabetic - should I consult OBGYN

Anonymous
I had my blood work done recently and I was surprised to see my fasting glucose is 100 and
A1C is 5.7. Diabetes runs in my family. I have since the tests, re-read some books and changed my diet which has resulted in weight loss and some symptoms going away (which h had overlooked). Should I consult and OBGYN before we try for a baby? Anyone else been in a similar situation?

I'm assuming you are over weight? If so, you need to take a year and lose with ozempic before trying. Where you are you'll automatically be extremely high risk of you conceive at all.

This is a little dramatic. Consulting with an OB is a decent idea, without knowing more about OP’s health. At 37 I would not wait to TTC, unless directed by a medical professional.

Definitely don’t wait a year to conceive. Talk to your OB, but don’t let this person scare you.

Prediabetes is reversible.

Plenty of overweight people have completely normal pregnancies. Your post is a bit ridiculous.

You can consult an OB if you like, but I wouldn’t wait to do it. Time is not on your side here.

I'm speaking from experience. My stats were the same as the OP and I was on insulin by 14 weeks and on hundreds of units by delivery. I was fine because I manage a child with T1D so very familiar with controlling diabetes. The average person would not be as equipped. It's a very difficult to control disease.

I had bad infertility both related and not related to the weight that was adding up thanks to recurrent miscarriages and fertility treatments. I was very fertile before gaining 10 lbs for every miscarriage and fertility treatment. By the end I was barely fertile. The recurrent miscarriages were not caused by the weight, but it was worsening the underlying condition (rare clotting disorder).

I've since gone on Ozempic post delivery and have lost 30 lbs so far. I have another 30 more to lose before being well out of the danger zone. I would highly recommend to anyone to lose the weight first even at 37.

NP here.

I knew I would have gestational diabetes again in my 2nd pregnancy because I had it in my 1st one. I had learned a lot about diabetes control in my first pregnancy and so I knew what I needed to do before I became pregnant. I was the same age for the 2nd pregnancy as OP. So, AMA (advanced maternal age - geriatric pregnancy) was an added concern in the 2nd pregnancy.

What I did to manage it was to be on an extremely healthy, organic diabetic diet from the first month itself. I ate measured amounts of protein, carbs, dairy, produce, fat etc and I ate a lot of veggies. I also looked at the glycymic index of all the fruits and veggies that I ate.

No junk food, no added sugar, small meals, skipped wheat and rice and substituted it with quinoa, nuts, millets, amaranth etc. No processed food at all.

Walking for 10 minutes after every meal. Lots of hydration.

I am pretty good about sticking to a strict diet and I can put in the work to eat a nutritionally excellent meal. I had such great results with my pregnancy and childbirth + my baby was so healthy - that I found it worthwhile.

What you eat and how you live (good sleep, low stress, exercise, good nutrition, being away from harmful substance) will have a direct impact on the health of your baby.

If you know that you are pre-diabetic then you should start on a diabetic diet, exercise, before you get pregnant. I am not a proponent of ozempic kind of meds to lose weight. You mess up your digestive system and gut health with these meds.

Anyways - that is my 2 cents. Don't have to wait to get pregnant. No need to take Ozempic etc. Eat very healthy and measuered meals. A diabetic diet is the best diet for being healthy. We all should be eating like that. Incorporate some gentle exercises and you are good.

OP here. Thanks so much for the feedback. I’ve changed my diet and am exercising and seeing changes. Will see my doc soon for a consult.

Great.

(I am the gest diabetes mom). Incidentally, my diet control was so good and nutritionally complete that I put on a total of 9 pounds. My baby was 7 lbs. Normal birth. So even when it looked that I was not putting on weight and the weight was stationary for some months, my fetus was growing well. I And I was easily able to EBF for 9 months and then BF up to 3 yrs.
