Adult Girl Scouts

I didn’t realize this was a thing! There’s adult membership and lifetime membership!

What do you do as an adult GS?

I never was able to join as a kid. I dreamt of being a Brownie, I was obsessed with the uniforms

I’d be intrigued to know how the adult Scouts are run.

Why not be a leader? Or a co leader?

Sorry to burst your bubble - I am an Adult Girl Scout who was never one as a kid. This is because I lead my daughter's troop. We are the leaders and facilitators. We are not running around earning badges.

Wife was a leader for a while.

Business experience is why annual cookie sales exist. It isn’t really about fundraising. Rather, it teaches the girls all about life in the business world. Many don’t get that.

GS provides a space free of the male-gaze.

For my wife, the Service Unit initially did a few campouts at local camps owned by GS. The cabins are kinda gross (ok REALLY gross). And people snore! The unit stopped the whole “camping” thing.

This has changed over the years. Troop Pearl is an example.

Just went to the local camps. They were gross. And I’m someone who regularly camps in county or state camp grounds. Those pit toilets reeked and made all the girls gag and cough. Backwoods camping peeing in bushes would be preferable.

The whole camping thing is just yucky.

Girl Scouts are always looking for volunteers. You can join as an adult and take training and then volunteer to do things like teach a Troop Axe Throwing or how to kayak, camp, etc.

Not at all.

For many kids it is their only experience with nature, stars, cooking over a fire , etc.

I'm a lifetime GS. I was one as a kid through 12th grade, now a leader for the past 9 years. There are women in our service unit whose kids are grown and gone, but they still help with troops, trainings, etc. The women I've encountered along the way have all been terrific!

My daughter was in GS when she was little. I volunteered with the troop, not a lot, just as a chaperone or to do something with the fall sale, and was told it was mandatory because I was a mandatory to become a member. Volunteers have to be members. It’s a way for them to make money.

Maybe there is more to it and there are actually adult Girl Scouts but I always resented that every year when I paid my membership dues.

* sorry got my typos. Any volunteers had to mat for a membership when my daughter was in GS. That was my point.

The toilets are universally disgusting.
