Am I overreacting?

Anonymous
My female GYN who is in her late 50's always starts each appointment with "Hello young lady". I'm 38 and find this condesceding. My friend who is tha same age thinks it's not a big deal and has said she even greets my friend's 70 year old mom who sees her, the same way. I saw her last week and almost said something. I find it really annoying and unprofessional. Am I overreacting?

Yes, I think you're overreacting, but if you don't like your doctor, switch to a new one.

Yes, I am 37 and would love to be called a "young lady." I love when I get carded buying wine too.

Yes, but if I was 70 that would be strange.

My dad used to do this with everyone he met. He meant it as a complement. While you may think it's weird or condescending, try not to take offense where it's obvious none is meant.

Yes. I just got ma'am-ed today, and let me tell you, I'd much prefer "young lady" to "ma-am"!

Since she knows your name I think "Hello Mary" would seem like a more normal greeting.

So do people sit around and think about things to be offended by? Good lord. She's not walking in with " Hey hooker, what's the haps?"

Relax.

So agree!! If that was the worst thing to happen to you all day I think you're doing pretty good.

Definitely overreacting. My 60yo boss calls me kiddo. I am 30yo. At the same time, this "kiddo" is regularly promoted with good raises and bonuses. Some kiddo, huh?

P.S. Oh, and I sometimes call him "old fart" to his face. Hasn't hurt my promotion record one bit.

It would bother me but I don't know whether I would do anything about it.
