There is a new study showing that no amount of alcohol is safe. It causes dementia and cancer. Put down the bottles people.
Here's the receipts from WAPO: https://wapo.st/42DbNdR |
| Nah, it's aluminum! |
In the beer cans? |
| Oh brother. Humans have been drinking alcohol since the beginning of human history. Life causes dementia and cancer, not alcohol. |
| Is there more dementia in countries with citizens who are known to drink more (the UK for example)? |
|
You're not wrong, OP. But be prepared for all the alcoholics on this forum to berate you for daring to mention anything bad about their beloved booze.
Apparently, the dementia starts early... |

I recently stopped drinking and am definitely better off. So, not trying to defend my nonexistent drinking.
But I don't understand this study. I don't have a WaPo subscription but I have read other articles and don't really understand the genetic analysis they did. Based on self reported drinking the study finds low levels of drinking to be healthier than nondrinking. I understand the issues with observational studies and self reporting behavior. I don't understand how the genetic analysis measures drinking behavior differently. |

There is some overlap but it’s not a direct correlation. The highest rates of dementia per the WHO are: Finland: 10.6% Sweden: 10.4% United Kingdom: 9.0% France: 8.9% Germany: 8.8% The highest rates of alcoholism is: Lebanon The Uk Peru Finland Togo |
| I guess no more ripe fruit. No more bread. No more yogurt. They and many other foods contain alcohol and no amount of alcohol is safe. |
| So glad i dont drink |
| Yawn. Those of us who drink will continue to drink. The Carrie Nations of DCUM will continue to pearl clutch. |
| I rarely drink but I just don’t get this. Italians Spaniards and the French all drink socially on a very regular basis. If this were true, they would have much higher rates of dementia. But they don’t seem to. Is it possible that people in the U.S. that drink regularly also tend to eat a diet that increases risk of dementia? |

So silly. People have been drinking wine since the beginning of time. Spirits too
Be responsible |
| They mention that a drink or two a day isn't risk free. But that doesn't seem like light drinking to me. Is there really evidence showing increased risk with truly light drinking - say a drink a month or a drink a year vs being a complete teetotaler? |
