Holiday Break Jobs for College Student

Anonymous
Seeking ideas for places that might need extra help over the holidays, to help my college freshman find a job (who has almost five weeks off). Trying to see if she can line something up when home for fall break or Thanksgiving. Any ideas? I assume stores and restaurants are likely, but I also know they may not be willing to hire/train for such a short period. In Bethesda/Potomac area.

My daughter isn’t in college yet but she works for a summer camp and goes back during breaks. Daycares will look for extra help for school age kids and they often need 18 plus for ratios so can’t hire high schoolers.

Babysitting, pet sitting and house sitting are also options.

Look for places that are truly seasonal like Christmas tree farms ?

Did your student work anywhere last summer? If so, I would start there because they are already trained. Most kids don’t get home until close to Christmas which means their break is mostly in January. Stores won’t be very interested.

+1 We sometimes have a difficult time finding a pet sitter for the week between Christmas and new year because people go away.

Honeybaked Ham. Seriously I did that over a couple of holidays for like 4 days each time, this was 30 years ago.

Stores that do a lot of Christmas/ holiday volume are happy to have seasonal help. Target, Old Navy, Bloomingdales, TJ Maxx - try all levels and I bet she gets something if she is available for 5 weeks.

Catering companies are always busy around the holidays. She might have to work the actual holidays though.

Old Navy. I saw a sign there this past week.

Temp service

My boss always made her kids get jobs over the holidays and the temp service always found them jobs.

Honestly, babysitting. Pays well, is especislly easy if it's a nighttime gig and you're putting them to bed and then just hanging out. Have them put a post on neighborhood SM that they are home and available, maybe even visit their old ES and tell a favorite teacher they are available and ask the teacher to help spread the word

+1 I did this when I was in college and when I first started teaching (I would temp in the summer). I got decent money and some decent office skills and organizational habits

Department stores, caterers, malls that provide gift-wrapping, hotels that host corporate holiday parties.

They don’t really need this after the new year though.
