Is it safe to use electric scooter to get to middle school instead of walking? I have seen a neighbor boy doing that going to school and coming home, but he seems to be a pro going fast on the road. I have not asked him yet, but wonder where he keep his scooter (locker big enough?) at school. Does school allow it? It will be 20 min walk one way.
Bike would be better.

Our kid rides an electric scooter to school and just locks it by the other bikes. He started with a low powered scooter in middle school and now has a somewhat higher powered scooter.
He locks his helmet with his scooter which seems to be the norm at his school. Actually most of the bike riders don’t bother locking their helmets at all and just hang them on the handlebars. I guess they aren’t popular to steal? |
My kid rides his to school and locks it with other bikes and wears a helmet.
Please tell your kids to obey rules of road and trails and bike paths. I walk a lot daily and electric scooters speed by all the time, often in kid driver clusters, and are a real hazard to walkers.
please require a helmet! injuries from these are pretty scary.
We don't have buses and DS, in 7th, rides his bike. It's almost 2 miles, so walking would take too long in the morning, biking is about 10 minutes. Under no circumstance would I let him use an electric scooter, even though it's an easy route. The dangers outweigh the convenience.
Check the law in your area. In MoCo you have to be 14.
Mine rides a bike. Why an electric scooter?
Bike.
Biking is safer than scooter, and good exercise.
These are hazards. The kids zip in front of cars or pedestrians, or don’t stop at the corner and get hit. Even with bikes, find a safe route and reinforce rules.
We know of a DS that died on one.
I wouldn’t let my kid bike or scoot around here.
Very dangerous. I saw a boy almost get hit on one yesterday in the neighborhood. He was riding the scooter in the road. The road has some cars parked along curbs which narrows the steeet for 2 cars to pass. This weaving out to the curb and then back out around the cars almost caused the accident as the boy was motoring back and forth around parked cars and the cars drive way too fast to anticipate a small unseen scooter that suddenly appeared.
