Nerf Guns

Anonymous
Our 8 yo DS begged for a nerf gun for several months, especially after he got to use his older cousin's nerf gun. We relented and got one. Now, he carries it all over the house and brings it to his bedroom at night "for protection."

It is too much. We had envisioned it as a fun toy for occasional use. I don't want to feed a fascination with guns.

Is this normal, or do we need to put it away for a while?

It will fade. Don't buy more shooters after they get lost

Switch it with something more appropriate- then pitch it. Don’t buy any more and if someone gets him one, pitch it. Btdt.

Um, this is totally normal. If you didn't get him a nerf gun, he would have used something else to pretend it was a gun. Just don't encourage but let him play and he will be fine.

Totally normal and harmless imo. We have piles of nerf weapons in the playroom. They don't often get taken upstairs though. You can put boundaries on when and where they are played with.

Some boys make anything a gun. This, too, will pass.

Of course, for both boys and even girls.

He's old enough for a BB gun also, or at least some airsoft guns.

It’s normal, but you can get rid of it if you want to. My DS8 uses the vacuum, a pen, his finger… almost anything can be a gun to a young boy. At least I have held fast to the idea of not having video games in the house.

OP, if it feels weird to you and isn’t how you want to raise your son- trust your instincts and replace it with a toy that you feel good about.

It disappears.

I have two brothers, grew up in a liberal east coast household, and we definitely had a lot of nerf guns and toy guns back then. Today given the seriousness of our gun epidemic, I don’t allow any toy guns in our house. I wouldn’t draw attention to your sons interest, as it sounds like imaginary play, but I wouldn’t encourage it either and wouldn’t buy more nerf guns.

Wait, is this type of harmless kid imagination the reason why every other kid in my neighborhood comes over wanting to borrow and play with my kids’ Nerf guns? Their parents won’t let them have them?? I have 2 boys and they have 4 Nerf guns between them plus a generic Walmart one that always gets clogged up. It’s not enough for the whole neighborhood!

Next phase will be swords. Buy some foam ones and battle with him and the guns will be quickly forgotten.

Normal, we literally have a 'weapons bin' in the boys bedroom. Kid's can play with those and not be 'gun obsessed'. Things aren't as black and white.

The day I get around to moving furniture around, lord only knows how many nerf bullets are going to be scattered around upstairs.
