| Anyone else noticed that the price of used goods has gone down a lot lately? I look on facebook marketplace and people are basically giving away stuff for free that used to command high prices. Whats going on? |
| They’ve realized with the onset of buy nothing groups and the ease of thrifting that people don’t want to pay high prices and have to meet a stranger for certain items. |
|
Examples? Only fad things used to command high prices and still don't.
Real collectables or well maid items retain their value. Fad "collectables" and cheap imported junk do not. |
| I think there are a lot of people trying to sell things so it’s a supply and demand issue. I’m a furloughed fed who has been cleaning out my garage. I’d rather sell something for cheap than have to haul it to a donation place so I price everything to sell. |

this is bs
used goods are not down |
| I haven’t noticed it. If anything, everyone and their uncle are now vintage dealers and are trying to sell stuff out of their garage for $$$. |
|
In the DC area where there are a lot of low-income feds... it might be because they're all flooding the market at the same time, desperately trying to make ends meet.
|
| On top of macro factors mentioned, I think a lot more people are very simply learning how to use Marketplace in the first place. I have used it off and on (buying and selling) since 2020 and the volume of both buyers and items for sales seems to have really taken off in the past year or so. My retired mother is even starting to use it when I used to list things for her (that were otherwise going to be trashed). Like another poster said, what may have previously been donated or literally trashed can now get posted for at least some cash. |
| Used cars too? |
| One thing I’ve noticed is that used clothing is now all priced the same. You could get great deals at consignment shops. Now the really top brands are still usually a good deal. But, mid-tier brands are often priced at the same level you could just get the item new if you waited for a sale. Clearly with the internet everyone is using the same guide to price. |
It is BS because, if anything, they would go up as families try to economize. |
| Do you have some examples op? |
No. Given tariffs the prices of good used goods (bikes, furniture, appliances) has gone up. Same as during Covid when shipping stopped. |
No not seen that. NP |
| This is not true I have not seen this. |
