47 with Seb derm, thinning hair and can’t keep a ponytail holder in hair due to thinning hair

Anonymous
I treat the Seb derm then scalp and hair just so dry and thinnning happening. I am so frustrated. Losing confidence over this and I have a prescription for oral minoxidil but have been hesitant to take it since I have heard the moment you go off, hair goes back to current state. Any recommendations?

Nizoral shampoo has been clinically proven to improve hair growth. Wet hair, shampoo and let it sit for 5 or more minutes. I have been using that with minoxidil topical because I was on medication that made my hair fall out. But understand it takes time. After 6 months, I have tons of baby hairs so it will likely be another 6 to 12 months before it looks thicker. I would also go see a dermatologist because you might have alopecia, which may need actual medication to get it to stop.

This was me 5 years ago, ditto the spironalactone rec. Being so oily during peri made my seb derm, rosacea, and acne act up, the androgen blocking properties of this med curb that

Which Nisoral shampoo do you use?

I have used topical minoxidil for almost 10 years. It’s really no big deal to use something every day. I keep my hair on the shorter side. It’s always been extremely fine and barely ponytail worthy anyway

You need a wig lady. That hair is not ever coming back. Not now. Not ever. Never!! There are a tone of white woman wigs now and they are undetectable.

Don't listen to this person. The science says hair can come back if it hasn't been lost for more than 10 years. Take the minoxidil - you won't end up worse than where you are now.

NP. I definitely think OP should try it, but just to note that I couldn’t handle minoxidil - it gave me really bad heart palpitations.

There's a really great episode of Dr. Kelly Casperson's podcast "You Are Not Broken" where she interviews a dermatologist specializing in hair loss. The episode is called Hair, Hair, Hair and it's worth a listen to hear about all of the science-backed treatment options. I noticed a lot of hair thinning at 47 and I went on HRT (for other reasons) and was pleasantly surprised that after about 6 months I noticed a lot of regrowth. I'm now about a year in and my hair is back to it's normal thickness and I'm continuing to notice regrowth along my hairline.
