Glimpse Videos - Do it or no? Already have interview.

Anonymous
Applying to top choice school that offers a Glimpse video submission but doesn't require it. DC will interview and submit their personal statement, but the school does not offer supplementals. I'm not sure off the cuff what DC could cover in a Glimpse video, but if it's a chance to put a face to a name and present as an engaged, excited person I suppose it could be helpful.

DCUM, what do you think about Glimpse videos? Do it or skip it (assuming you already have an interview)?

Yes absolutely.

It should cover something new entirely - nowhere else in the application. A personality trait, hobby, or interest. Something that brings them to life.

Remind the kid to write and outline, and practice.

AO like to see these to see if the "voice" of the kid matches the quality of the essays. Its to help with fraud.

Duke, Northwestern, WashU, and Vanderbilt like them a lot and expect them.

My DD is at Northwestern and she did not submit the video, things were stressful and she didn't make time to do it, but she did get in so I don't think it mattered that much.

DC got in WashU with full tuition ride without Glimpse Video

Wonder if they want them more now bc of AI?
Probably not relevant last few years? How long have they been around?

I think they're 100% required for international kids. they want to see you can actually speak English, participate in class.

For US kids who dont have names that raise any alarm bells for the racist-leaning 24 yo readers, not necessary at all. You have any chance of just not presenting in a way that vibes w the reader. "oh, another cheerleader" or "oh, another climate activist". dont risk it

+1

My eldest DC got into 3 LACs last year without doing any videos, but did do interviews instead. We heard from our private CC that it wasn't necessary for domestic applicants but essential for international applicants.

Always do all optional items.

My DC also got into WashU without a Glimpse Video. No full tuition though

DC got into WashU and Duke (had interview) without glimpse video.

Check to see whether the "interview" you're referring to is evaluative or more informational. Most don't really move the needle.

As for Glimpse, I think it depends on the school. NU seems to have started using Glimpse when they eliminated interviews, but interviews were not a big deal there, unlike some other schools.

My understanding is that the video is important for Brown.

Forgot to add, I have a kid at NU who did not interview, back when interviews were offered and before Glimpse was an option. I have a second kid at NU who is a freshman who did the Glimpse video.
