This is not something I've ever bought before! Is it the same everywhere? Does anywhere have particularly good prices?
|
| Costco has great cocktail shrimp. It’s near the prepared meals/rotisserie chickens. |
| Wegmans or Costco if you mean cocktail shrimp. Both are good. Harris teeter ones are not good. |
|
Watch out for Walmart brand ones. About a month ago they were caught selling them higly contaminated with Cesium 137, which is only produced in nuclear reactors.
They were either sourced from Fukishima or else deliberately contaminated. Always check with a radiation detector. |
| Sounds like food poisoning waiting to happen. Just buy at a restaurant, or boil yourself. It cooks super fast. |
| Legal Seafood mail order |
| Trader Joes. Cooked but still have the peel to pull off. Delicious. |
| Do you want it ready to eat, like for shrimp cocktail? Most grocery stores have it near the seafood counter. You can also buy precooked in the freezer section, but see post above about radioactive Walmart shrimp! |
Trader Joe's sells deveined shrimp that have the poop vein still in them. Really disgusting and disappointing if you're not prepared to deal with that. False advertising. Whole Foods sells both frozen and fresh cooked shrimp. They used to have a fantastic lime and cilantro one but they stopped selling it for some reason. |
Sounds like false advertising. Plus a huge health risk. |
Not a health risk. |

Good tips all, thank you!
I'm serving a deliberately kitschy nostalgic theme dinner, like a Frank Sinatra vibe, with wedge salads and fondue. Any other use of shrimp and I'd be on more comfortable territory. |
Indonesia is simply where the shrimp were processed/bagged, not the source of the radioactive shrimp. |
