I don't want to keep my emergency fund in a savings account. It's just too easy for me to access and spend. I want to put somewhere that's not so easy to access unless I have a true emergency. I've heard of money market funds but I don't know a lot about them.
Where do you keep your emergency fund if outside of a regular savings account. |
| high interest savings account |
|
It was in a mutual fund now it’s in an ETF.
|
| Some in I-bonds, some in a MMA, some in savings. It's all money that wouldn't ever be pulled into checking without the transfer being precipitated by a job loss or similar serious family crisis. |
|
We keep emergency funds in: HYSA, MMF and Bond fund etf.
There’s nothing wrong with spending your emergency funds. You just need to replenish. |
| in my mattress |

HYSA - open an account at a different bank than your daily banking, which you’d likely have to do anyway since most of the HY ones are online banks (Ally, Marcus, etc). Put the money in and forget the account exists
MMA - if you already have a brokerage account somewhere, just find a mutual fund (eg VMRXX) to park it, again, not commingled with funds you plan to use |
| Ibonds and an online HYSA |
| In gold, it's in a safe that was brought in by 5 250lb guys. |
| HYS at a different bank, but it's easy to transfer. You might need to ladder CD's if you think you'll spend it. |
|
Honestly we keep the bulk of it ($45k) in checking. I just want the money RIGHT THERE. Probably silly, but there you have it.
We have another $20k in a CD. |
| Money market |
Why not keep $10k in checking and $35k in savings at the same bank? At my bank you can move funds internally immediately. At 3.5% that's an extra $100/month in interest, better than nothing. |
