| My sons is a freshman at Lewis High School and he was told by a teacher they aren't allowed to do field trips to Washington DC this year. My daughter goes to another school in the same pyramid and they are going to the Natural History Museum (once the shutdown is over). Is this a school by school policy? |
| That's strange and the first I've heard of this policy. Lewis offered field trips to DC last year. |
| I thought one of the main features of the Lewis Leadership Program was field trips to DC. |
I thought so too. My daughter is taking government this year and her teacher also said they aren't doing the capital trip this year. |
| The problem with dc fields trips on fcps buses from our kids school is they have leas than an hour at the museum before they have to turn around and come back. |
| we only did Museum trips in elementary school. |
| I’m a principal and have heard nothing about this. Sounds like some teacher was misinformed or just speculating but speaking as it was the truth. |
| It sounds like someone’s trying to stir up drama to make it sound like DC is dangerous and kids aren’t allowed there. |
| My ES kid will have a field trip to the Kennedy Center later this year. |
|
Could be anything- budget cuts, nobody stepping up to take care of the logistics, anticipated govt shutdown, bus driver availability.
Are they considering an alternative instead? |
An alternative to what? There is no evidence that any trips to DC have been cancelled or delayed. One post by some anonymous person on DCUM does make something a fact. |
| It's a school by school choice and Lewis is choosing to not go to DC this year. They were supposed to do a big World 2 trip to different museums this year as part of their leadership program, but they cancelled it. They also usually go to the capital building each year, but it.is cancelled as well. |
Perhaps you should get information from more than a singular source at the HS? And verify what your child is telling you, because there's almost certainly some information being lost in the conveyance. |
| The problem with going to DC is that the bus has to leave so late in the day, once all the bus runs are complete, that there’s not much time at the field trip place before they have to get back on the bus to return for dismissal. This has been a frustrating problem for a long time. The only way around it is to rent a charter bus, and then you can leave as early as kids can get there and return later. The charter buses are very expensive. It’s really sad because being so close to DC can’t be taken advantage of. |
| I contacted the school and they did say with the current environment they don't feel safe taking students to DC. It's a school by school decision and Lewis is choosing not to do DC trips this year. |
