Today at 9:30 am, I was driving near Mclean High School and noticed two kids just handing out. They were in the school parking lot just talking.....

I remember back in the day, we were allowed to call FCPD if we saw kids skipping.

if it is an unexcused absence they are not supposed to be able to turn in work or take a test.

You don’t know if they were skipping. Maybe they were seniors with late arrival.

I work in a different school and nothing happens. I mark them absent and go about my day. I don’t bother with referrals or contacting home anymore. I could spend all day going back through to see if Jack was absent in my class but present in his other classes and trying to determined if he skipped. No one has time for that. So I enter in attendance and go on teaching. With around 150 students, that’s about all I can do.

As for turning in work, half of the time the unexcused absences are changed later to excused because the parents forgot to call in the sick absence. So I am not going back to check that either and let them make up assignments.

If they were in the high school parking lot at 9:30, most likely they were leaving school after 1st period to drive to their academy classes at a different school, or they were seniors with a free period arriving at school for their first class.

+1. It's not my job to chase down the students who are skipping. Admin is supposed to deal with it but they usually don't. The kids who occasionally miss class for a legitimate reason such as illness usually make up the work. The ones who regularly skip don't. I enter a 0 and focus on the kids who want to learn.

That said, there are a lot of reasons high schoolers might be outside during the school day as others have said.

OP, for real? A million legit reasons for two kids to be in the lot at that time.

What happens? Not much. As a parent, I get an automated email if my kid is marked absent and I didn't call in or submit an online absence form. That's it. I've heard the school will follow up with a live person if there are a lot of absences, but I haven't experienced that.

My kid did have one class at a nearby school. Every other day, he'd go to his first class at his base school, then leave and drive over to another school for his second class, then leave and drive back to his base school. Nobody ever stopped him or questioned him walking out of either school.
