I have 2 narrow gold necklaces, one herringbone with a pendant (my summer necklace that I wear 24x7 unless I dress formally) and a narrow Byzantine one. Both have small lobster claw clasps.
Getting the summer one off today was a bit of a struggle because the lever to open the claw kept slipping out from my thumbnail. But worse, I can't fasten the other one, same reason. Not seeing what I am doing is even harder. I don't remember this issue but I guess it's age. I could ask DH but he hates such tasks and isn't very adept at necklace clasps. Is there something to buy to hook on as an adapter that gas bigger clasps? Where would I get it? Thanks. |
| My mom had hers all switched to magnetic fasteners. She hasn't had issues with them fall ing off, but you might want a clasp on your more expensive jewelry. |
| I have this issue with some of my jewelry too. I keep my nails shorter which helps, but I definitely blame age. |
| I just bought a few magnetic fasteners from Amazon. I originally bought them because I like to layer necklaces and they kept getting tangled together. This keeps them separate, but also makes it much easier to get them on and off. |
| Thanks. I don't really want magnetic clasps that you pull apart. I wear these in the shower, sleeping, swimming, snorkeling, whatever. I basically put it on and leave it on for months. The clasps have been great but I need a physical closure. |

You should be able to take them to any custom jeweler and ask them to change the clasps.
If you prefer to DIY, go to any bead store or craft store and look at their selection of clasps. You'll need a set of needle-nose pliers, and may need a set of split rings depending on the necklace and clasp configuration. |
| Gold necklace clasps are getting smaller because the cost of gold is so high now. |
| Definitely take them to a jeweler and get them changed to an easier clasp. Or a toggle. |
| Jeweler sounds like good plan. Any recommendations in the Arlington, Falls Church or McLean areas? Thanks. |
