Early Action - High School Transcripts

Anonymous
My daughter missed the deadline to submit the requests to her school for her high school transcripts that she will need to apply EA to several schools. I'm really upset with her for procrastinating and now missing this deadline. She will need to apply RD to some of those schools. Will this put her at a disadvantage. She has excellent grades and a SAT of 1460. She's very upset with herself right now and I think that she learned an important lesson.

I think it depends on the school. Some schools favor EA - UMD is an example. Other schools use EA to award merit aid. Some schools use EA for Honors programs like University of South Carolina. You would need to go through her list and see which schools favor EA. It’s a brutal process, your daughter isn’t alone!!

It might cost you money. More merit aid for EA

Apply EA. Most colleges will go through the app without official transcripts. Your high school cannot withhold transcripts

The counselor sent a deadline of last week. She did not fill out the forms to send transcripts to those universities that are EA. I'm not sure that the school will be able to send them since my daughter did not submit the form by the requested due date.

Im so sorry. We were told EA really helps for admission at many schools (umd is one). As the parent, I would personally call the school counselor. These kids are managing a lot right now. Be very kind, make up a reason if needed. It's only end of September, they could make an exception and do it. These things are all uploaded. From now on, get a copy of upcoming deadlines so you can help keep things on track. Many other kids use private counselors and other adults to help. You can help... and good luck!!!

Submit anyway. It is quite possible the high school will manage to submit the transcript, with over a month to do so.

Which colleges have such an early deadline for EA? Now I am freaking out...

I don’t think it’s the college. It’s the HS making sure that every senior’s transcript gets to every place on time.

Correct! It is the HS who requested that the students submit the request for transcripts for each school that they would like to apply to. This deadline was last week and she missed it.

Isn’t it over a month till the EA deadlines? (Most are Nov 1?). Honestly, that’s enough time for the school. I am not a pushy parent and rarely intervene but it’s worth you making a call to guidance counselor and saying, look she’s sorry but we need this by Nov 1.

I’d feel differently if it was a week out but that’s a super early school deadline if it is Nov 1.

It is not the college; it is her HS who requested that she submit a list of school that need the transcripts for Nov 1st EA decision.

The worst they can say is no but I think you should put a little pressure on and see.

The counselor sent a deadline of last week. She did not fill out the forms to send transcripts to those universities that are EA. I'm not sure that the school will be able to send them since my daughter did not submit the form by the requested due date.

Many high schools have this process so that they have enough time to get it all done. They know full well that some students will forget to request by the high school's artificial deadline.

That does not mean the high school will fail to get it done. Just submit the request now. And submit the apps by the app deadline. In all likelihood, the high school will get it done.

Also keep in mind that many colleges allow a grace period after the deadline for receiving documents from the high school. This is unstated. When it's past the deadline and the school docs are still not submitted, call the admissions office to ask about this.

Most document deadlines, even for 10/15 app deadlines, are not until November.

This is good advice a true IME.
