ADHD meds and appetite stimulant

Anonymous
If an appetite stimulant was needed alongside a stimulant for adhd, how long was it needed? My ds just doesn’t eat well without it. Although, it’s true during medication breaks as well. Trying to figure out how long others may have taken it. Thanks

Has your child been on the stimulant for a while or only just started? My DD only seemed to be affected the first couple of months after she started a stimulant. She’s always eaten like a bird but the meds suppressed her appetite even more. During that time, we really didn’t fuss over what she was eating just as long as she was eating something. But then the effect tapered off and her appetite returned.

My kid took cyproheptadine for several years, until we added abilify to his meds.

It’s been over a year and definitely only eats more in the stimulant. Otherwise, gets full very quickly.

Thanks for the info. Did the dr ever mention if there was long term effects of taking cyproheptadine?

This med is best avoided. How far along are you in this journey? My DC who is not a great eater to begin with turns lunch more into a snack and eats an after dinner snack to compensate.

Why do you feel it’s best avoided? It’s the only thing that helps my child eat throughout the day but I am concerned about long term side effects.
