Tariffs on medicines??

Is it true that the government will add a Trump Tax to medications?

My parent is already paying around $15K just to live in assisted living. I did not consider that someone would choose to charge more for needed medications.

Most medications prescribed in the US are manufactured in the US. I wouldn't worry too much about this unless you know their meds are imported.

Don't the ingredients come from other countries though?

Many pharmaceutical companies manufacture prescription drugs in the US, including major players like AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and AbbVie, but the extent of US manufacturing varies by drug type, with injectables being more likely produced domestically compared to solid oral dosage forms, which are often manufactured in India.

However no company is investing in the US under Trump more will move out of the country.

MAGA has no idea what they have done

Pharma companies can be exempt from tariffs if they have or are planning to build manufacturing facilities in the US. It's just creating a lever to force pharma companies to build in the US.

AstraZeneca recently announced they are planning to build a facility in Virginia. I wonder if they knew this was going to happen.

The biggest manufacturer of generic drugs is Teva, an Israel based company with manufacturing sites all over the world.

Many companies manufacture aboard and moving that to the US is not easy especially for commercial products.

I haven't heard this.

The tariff applies to BRAND/PATENTED pharmaceuticals manufactured overseas, not to generics.

Especially given that ICE just rounded up a bunch of South Koreans who were legally in the US starting a factory. What company would send staff over to launch manufacturing in the US now?

Thanks. I wonder if the pharma companies will build small places here just to placate the administration.

I hear you but this administration doesn't exactly stick to what they say all the time...

India is one of the larger pharma manufacturers, especially for generic brands. They US tariffs on India exempt pharmaceuticals for a reason.
