Board of Education Board Business Meeting Sept 25 Thread

Let's discuss what was shared at the BOE today.

So the BOE has its own analyst now....hopefully that makes them smarter.

1:27:30 - last testimony today dug out more story from Taylor’s previous serviced district.

1:39:54 - Silvestre clarified again that BOE will not vote on regional model. I interpreted that as BOE has forseen alarming signs and they want to get away from sharing accountability of the decision.

Any other highlights?

Since the BOE has gotten into the habit of screening and limiting public comments, I don't think they should allow people from organization to dominate the way that they let the robotics kids do it. They should be limited to no more than three spots.

That is BS and no one should let her/the Board get away with that. MCPS sent an email out literally today once again saying "The Board of Education is expected to take final action in December" on the program analysis. If they think it's not going to go well and they just want to wash their hands of responsibility for it, that is cowardly.

The testimony from Laura Civilico from the Poolesville Humanities program calling MCPS out for not engaging in authentic and real community and public engagement was fantastic! So impressed with her.

Oh boy....Sandra Landis got to Peter Boyko and got him to push the school start times agenda....that's a losing battle....

Rita Montoya is absent again for the Public Comments portion of the meeting. She's absent from way too many board meetings for my liking.

I thought the Poolesville student speaking at 1:05:13 was powerful in calling out the way MCPS is not incorporating real community input in the program analysis.

Her calling on the Board to "compel" MCPS to pay attention to community feedback, and keep Poolesville Humanities countywide, is probably what Silvestre was responding to when she was talking about the program analysis being a superintendent responsibility? But if the Board can't push MCPS to seek genuine community input on something like this, what are they even there for?

This is a burning question that needs an answer.

Brigid Howe's testimony about the more meaningful role the BOE can and should be playing in making it safer to walk to school. It sounds like the pushback on the resolution and the death of Wheaton student James Anderson made Taylor ask schools to cancel National Walk to School Day celebrations.

OMG! Lin Li did his homework and absolutely SKEWERED Taylor and his Regional Programs model and showed how it was a copy and paste failure from Stafford! How embarrassing.

She needs to go.

What hate-filled email to admin is Brenda Wolff talking about and why did she attach it to the Robotics team's request???

I don’t get the pushback but Mcps should honor this student more. Everyone is using him to push their agendas without respecting two people passed away. It should be held. Some of the safety issues are not mcps but Mcps should offer school busses across major roads and unsafe neighborhoods and not just the two mile rule. Some neighborhoods go across major streets with no crossings guards and don’t have sidewalks.
