I work for an agency that was in the news yesterday for planning RIFs to hit mid-October. From the leaks in May, it sounded like my job and broader division would likely be on the chopping block.
There is ONE lateral transfer open within commuting distance that I could apply for. It would add time each way to my commute, be higher stress and less flexibility, and require going back to wearing (and ironing!) uniforms on the daily...I don't wanna do it. It would probably be an interesting job in itself, but I love my job now and have a good team and logistical situation. Am I being a giant baby? Do I just need to apply? Or is it not insane to wait it out and see if I survive RIFs? I am married with kids and our health insurance, and 2/3 of our HHI come from my job. |
| Yes you need to apply. |

Thanks for responding.
But man, this really sucks. My current job is one I wanted to do for maybe not the rest of my career, but probably the next decade. And I think it does meaningful and useful work. I wish they'd let us know if our jobs were going away and THEN apply for transfers, rather than this guessing camw. |
| Update: I put together the whole application but I haven't hit send. |
| Hit send. It doesn't have to be forever. |
| I wouldn’t jump to an inferior job: who knows if you’ll actually get RIF’d? And if you do, you’d have notice and severance to buy some time to find your next position. |
+1. You will know if you're being RIFed by the time you get to the offer stage. Stay at your great job if it's still yours. |
I'm not sure about that. They're processing these transfers FAST. Could be bridge burning. |
